Pregnancy is a crucial time for both the mother and the baby. The mother needs to take care of herself because if she is healthy, the baby will subsequently be healthy too. The pregnant mother should be keen to ensure that she looks into all the needs of her growing baby. It is possible for the mother to only concentrate on her needs and forget the unique needs of the baby. Below we will look at some of the feeding habits that someone who is pregnant should adopt to ensure that she and the child are in good health.
Eat a properly cooked or prepared balanced diet – This is very important. The expectant lady should ensure that she always has all the necessary nutrients in her daily diet. She should know how to best prepare and cook the foods ideal for her and the baby. She should have the right food processors to prepare the food in the right way.
The basic nutrients that the mother should always ensure are in her daily diet include
Carbohydrates – Carbohydrates provide energy for the mother and child. Unlike when the mother was not pregnant, the pregnant woman carries more weight and has more body functions that require more energy. As such, whilst maintaining her normal daily activities, the pregnant woman should increase her supply of carbohydrates. If a woman becomes inactive during the time when she is pregnanct, she should reduce her carbohydrate intake. Too much carbohydrates with little exercise even in pregnancy will only lead to unwanted weight gain.
Proteins – A pregnant woman should eat a healthy amount of protein to ensure that the baby growing in her gets enough building blocks to develop normally.
Vitamins and minerals – When pregnant, the woman should ensure that she takes enough vitamins and minerals in her diet. These are essential for her health and that of the baby. Since getting all the necessary nutrients from natural food can sometimes be hard, there are prenatal vitamins that are offered over the counter that are highly recommended for any pregnant woman.
The mother-to-be is also encouraged to take a lot of fruits and vegetables in her daily diet. It is especially important to consult with a dietician who will specify fruits and vegetables that are good in providing folic acid which is good for preventing neural defects. One should also get fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin A. Fruits and vegetables are also good for providing fiber.
Iodine and calcium are very important for the baby’s development during pregnancy. Iodine helps in the development of the baby’s brain. Iodine also helps regulate the mother’s hormones during pregnancy and will help prevent miscarriages and still births. Calcium helps in the development of the baby’s bones. Foods rich in iron should be taken to encourage blood production in the baby.
A pregnant mother should therefore ensure that her kitchen is well stocked with foods rich in the above nutrients. She should also know the healthy ways of preparing and cooking the food. Quick nutritional foods such as smoothies which are simply made by blending a variety of nutritious fruits and vegetables are very good.
